the ultimate insider guide to telluride
North America’s Resort Gem
In the fall of 1972, Ski Magazine featured an article titled, “The New Two,” which heralded the debuts of both Copper Mountain and Telluride. I avidly read that article and then passionately announced to my friend (and eventual brother-in-law) Peter Flagg, “That’s it! We’re going to Telluride!” To me, Copper sounded like a watered-down version of Vail, whereas the Telluride portrayal was steeped in alpine box-canyon allure and adventure.
As promised, in December 1972 we drove from Connecticut to Telluride Colorado, a former Wild West mining town that was tenuously subsisting via its last remaining gold and silver mine. And in that inaugural winter, an indigenous population of 250 miners and dependents collided with about the same number of long-haired hippie ski bums, hell-bent upon unlocking their ultimate high-altitude adventure. The rest is history.

“Telluride is a powerful elixir for the mind, body and–perhaps most importantly–the SOUL!
I know no other place that is so warmly inviting, and yet so instantly awe-inspiring.”
Sandra Miller, Los Angeles
